See what Lakeshore Foundation can do for you!
Each year, professionals at Lakeshore Foundation serve more than 3,000 individuals with physical disabilities; from babies who are six months old to men and women well into their 90's. Lakeshore meets their critical needs for access to exercise and recreation opportunities--needs that can't be met elsewhere. We are setting a standard in this country and changing the perception of people with disabilities. See how we can help you on your own path.
Family Health & Wellness
Lakeshore Foundation offers membership opportunities to individuals, couples, families, seniors and youth with physical disabilities in the greater Birmingham community. Membership at Lakeshore Foundation includes access to our state-of-the-art fitness and aquatics facility, as well as land-based and aquatics classes, and youth athletics and recreation programs.
Youth
Youth ages 6 months-21 years with physical disabilities make up Lakeshore Foundation's dynamic youth program that includes a variety of land and aquatics recreation activities and classes, Learn-to-Swim classes, holiday and weekend camps, sports activities and much more! We offer a number of weekend activities for families that don't live as close to Lakeshore. Participation in these special activities does not require membership at Lakeshore Foundation.
Lima Foxtrot Programs for Injured Military
Lakeshore Foundation's Lima Foxtrot programs include a number of weekend-long camps that bring injured military personnel and their families from across the country to Alabama. Each camp, referred to as an operation, is offered at no charge for the participants. Activities include Operation Rise & Conquer, an outdoor adventure weekend held at Lake Martin; Operation Night Vision, a camp specifically designed for injured troops who have suffered blindness or visual impairment; Operation X-Sports for servicemen and women interested in extreme sports; and Operation Endurance, which provides daily fitness programs to recently injured military personnel returning home to Alabama.
LiveFit!
Lakeshore Foundation is committed to improving the health, self esteem and peer relationships of individuals with physical disabilities through physical activity programs and educational outreach. Opportunities include educational trainings, ability awareness, and equipment rental programs.
Recreation
Hunting, fishing, paddling, sled hockey, shooting sports, handcycling and water skiing are just a sample of the indoor and outdoor opportunities available. Even if you don't live in the greater Birmingham area, you are welcome to join us on many of our recreational trips. You do not have to be a member of Lakeshore Foundation to participate in a number of our recreation programs.
Competitive Athletics
Competitive athletics at Lakeshore Foundation for youth and adults provide an outlet for competitive drive, enhance independence and contribute to the athlete's overall health and well-being. Opportunities include wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, swimming, marksmanship, wheelchair tennis and track & field.
Research & Education
As an organization that strives to provide cutting-edge services to individuals with physical disabilities, it is Lakeshore's responsibility to not only provide quality programs that lead to healthy, active, independent lifestyles, but also to show that these programs have the predicted benefit.
