Ella King Feature

A year ago, the mere sight of water would make 5-year-old Ella King's bottom lip curl and send tears down her cheeks. Nowadays, when Ella has to miss her ACES (Adult Child Exercise and Swim) or a swim lesson, you're likely to get the same reaction.

"She would cry and scream about getting in the water but the (Lakeshore Foundation) staff was so diligent about being patient with her," said Ella's mother Laura. "Now she swims the full length of pool by herself. With the paralysis that she has, we have a difficult time getting cardio workout. In the pool, she can. It's been absolutely wonderful for her."

Ella was diagnosed with spina bifida at birth. Her family moved to Birmingham when she was two years old, and she began attending an early intervention program. Her therapist recommended the Wet Tots program at Lakeshore Foundation.

"We noticed an improvement within a few weeks," said Laura. "The benefits of the water were immediate - she was walking and her stamina increased quickly."

Diana Helt, Coordinator of Youth Programs and Recreation, has worked with Ella in various water programs. "Water provides freedom of movement," she said. "It allows youth to gain functional skills and move without relying on wheelchairs or crutches. Most of all, water is fun."

Nowadays, when Ella is not at pre-school or spending time with her family, you're likely to find her in the pool at Lakeshore Foundation's aquatic center. She has also climbed to the top of the rock wall and learned how to roller skate at Lakeshore.

"We love Lakeshore Foundation," said Laura. "It has been life changing for us. Everybody here has the mindset of, ‘If you think you can't do something because of your disability, we'll figure out a way you can.'"
